![]() ![]() The Poetic Edda is a collection of poems, most of which can be linguistically dated to having been composed during the Norse pagan period although they were physically written down later. If you aren’t already aware, there are two of them, namely the Poetic Edda and the Prose Edda. These “Eddas” are our main sources for Norse mythology. Well, let’s look at what the sources say. But why should you trust me over a big-name show that is “a century in the making” and “ for the first time collected the greatest myths of the Norse Eddas and woven them into one epic saga”? And yet here I am telling you this is a misconception. Most recently, Spotify released a sponsored podcast called Thor & Loki that, within it’s one-and-a-half minute introduction, makes reference to “the nine realms” and claims that “all worlds are branches on Yggdrasill”. It seems these “nine realms” are incorporated into virtually every piece of popular media dealing with Norse mythology that has been produced within my lifetime at least. “The nine realms of Norse mythology” is one of the biggest and most common misconceptions about our source material that exists.
